ENGLISH TRANSLATION

A LITTLE EXTRA

On Saturday morning, Rose is working in her little shop. The shop is in Opelousas. There is hot coffee and fresh beignets. Two people are eating by the window. Outside, the sun is shining.

Lucien comes in with his brother. They want to have breakfast at home. Lucien asks for six beignets. Rose puts them in a box. She closes the box and gives it to Lucien.

Lucien pays Rose. Rose asks about his mother. “She is well,” Lucien says. Then they go home. Their house is not far away. The coffee is ready in the kitchen. Their father is working outside. They put two cups on the table.

Lucien opens the box. He sees seven beignets, not six. He looks at his brother. “I asked for six beignets. But there are seven here.” His brother asks, “Did you pay for seven?” Lucien says no.

Lucien picks up his phone. He calls Rose. “There are seven beignets in my box. I paid for six.” Rose answers, “Yes, I know. The last beignet is a little extra. It is for you.”

Lucien says thank you. He puts the phone on the table. His brother takes three beignets. Lucien takes three too. The last beignet stays in the box. They look at it. Who will eat it?

They hear a little noise at the door. Their neighbor Céleste is there with a bottle of milk. “I have too much milk. Would you like it?” Lucien gets another cup. He opens the door wide.

Céleste sits with them. She takes the last beignet. Lucien puts milk in his coffee. Now there are three people at the table. The box is empty. But breakfast is not over. They have a lot to talk about. They drink their coffee slowly.
