Who speaks Breton, and what do they call it?
Breton, brezhoneg, is spoken in Brittany, north-western France, by people who grew up with it and later learners. Family speech continues around Bégard in Trégor; children use Breton for lessons, play and meals at Diwan schools. These schools aim for active bilingualism in Breton and French.
How many people speak Breton in historical Brittany?
A 2024 survey estimated 107,000 residents aged fifteen and over in historical Brittany’s five departments who said they spoke Breton very well or fairly well. These are Côtes-d’Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan and Loire-Atlantique. A comparable worldwide total remains uncertain.
Where did Breton come from, and who spoke it in the past?
Breton developed from speech brought to Armorica by Britons crossing from Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries. It belongs to the Celtic branch of Indo-European, with Welsh and Cornish its closest living relatives.
Ninth-century Old Breton glosses, explanations added to Latin texts, survive in Orléans MS 221. This written evidence comes centuries after the migrations.
Which Breton words might an English speaker already recognise?
Menhir, an upright prehistoric stone, reached English through French, from Breton words for “stone” and “long”. Kouign-amann, familiar in food writing, means “butter cake” and names the layered, caramelised speciality associated with Douarnenez.
How does Breton vary from region to region?
The four traditional dialect areas are Léon, Trégor, Cornouaille and Vannes, following old diocesan boundaries. Local pronunciation and vocabulary vary across them; shared spelling coexists with this regional speech.
What is Standard Breton, and where is it used?
Peurunvan, the unified spelling developed in 1941, is widely used in schools and publishing. Shared written usage accommodates regional pronunciations without prescribing one accent. Other spelling conventions include skolveurieg and etrerannyezhel.
Which alphabet does Breton use, and what might surprise an English speaker?
The Latin-based Peurunvan alphabet has 25 letters, counting ch and c’h separately. The apostrophe belongs to c’h, as in ar c’hi, “the dog”; c, q and x are not separate letters. Foreign words can retain other spellings.
The sign ñ gives the preceding vowel a nasal quality, as in Fañch, without adding another letter to that count. Zh in brezhoneg accommodates regional z and h pronunciations.
Does Breton have grammatical gender?
Yes. Nouns belong to masculine or feminine grammatical classes.
How do you say hello, thank you and goodbye in Breton?
- Demat — hello.
- Trugarez — thank you.
- Kenavo — goodbye.
Mont a ra mat?, “How are things?”, is also a spoken greeting in central Brittany.
What are some memorable Breton sayings?
- An douar zo kozh met n’eo ket sot. “The earth is old, but it is not stupid.” Said when unfertilised soil yields little: land needs care.
- Pelloc’h eo gant e dog, evit gant e vazh. “One goes further with a hat than with a stick.” Recorded in Bégard, it praises courtesy over aggression.
What everyday customs might surprise a visitor?
At a fest-noz, people dance together to singers or instrumental musicians. Many dances link neighbours by their little fingers.
In the Pays Bigouden, a pardon honours a church or chapel’s saint with a procession, Mass and blessing. Some include fairs; Tréminou’s combines the religious celebration with fairground rides and fried pastries.
Which Breton-language song and film offer a cultural introduction?
Denez Prigent’s Gortoz a ran, recorded with Lisa Gerrard, is a Breton-language duet that also appears in Black Hawk Down. Its lyrics evoke waiting, sea and a wind carrying the speaker away. Prigent decided to sing in Breton after hearing the Goadec sisters.
Lann Vraz (2013), directed by Soazig Daniellou, follows Gwenn’s return to a coastal peninsula. Her former love manages a nature reserve in conflict with her family’s oyster business. The film is in Breton.
What is available for someone curious about the language now?
- Desketa, from the Office Public de la Langue Bretonne, offers free beginner lessons, games and recordings online, with a trial before account creation. It works on computers and smartphones.
- Meurgorf, the office’s free historical dictionary, allows whole-word and partial-word searches. It gives dated examples in original spellings, with modern transcriptions where needed.
- Brezhoneg Bro-Vear, from Hent Don, provides recordings of speech around Bégard in Trégor, organised as a dictionary and topic pages.
Fun Facts
- Jehan Lagadeuc’s Catholicon, printed in Tréguier in 1499, brings Breton, French and Latin together in one book.
- Daoulagad, a pair of eyes, builds “two” into the word. One eye is lagad.
