Is Western Apache one language or several local voices?

Western Apache belongs to the Southern Athabaskan, or Apachean, language group. Its communities are in Arizona, including San Carlos and the White Mountain Apache Reservation. The name covers a cluster of varieties: the Apache Language Consortium groups its dictionary work around San Carlos, White Mountain, and Dilzhe’e.

The consortium’s introductory textbook includes local vocabulary variants and illustrations across 24 units. San Carlos Apache College also uses the name Nnee Biyáti’ for Western Apache.

The Yavapai-Apache Nation is in Arizona’s Verde Valley, with communities at Tunlii, Middle Verde, Rimrock, Camp Verde, and Clarkdale. The nation is home to two peoples with different languages: Apache belongs to the Athabaskan family, while Yavapai belongs to the Yuman family.

What do the accents and little hooks tell us?

Written Apache uses Latin letters with marks that carry information about sound. In the Dilzhe’e dictionary, a doubled vowel lasts longer, a hook below a vowel marks nasal pronunciation, and an acute accent marks high pitch.

The apostrophe counts as a consonant letter in this spelling system. It marks a brief closure like the one between the two parts of English uh-oh.

San Carlos Apache College’s Windows lab computers have an Apache keyboard layout installed. Its keymap includes accented and hooked vowels and the letter ł.

How do people write a greeting or a thank-you in San Carlos?

  • Dagot’éé — greetings.
  • Ahíyi’é — thank you.

Is there a short piece to read in Apache?

Annette Ayze’s A Warm Welcome to My Apache People appears in the college’s 2024–2025 catalog, with Apache followed by an English version. The poem begins by thanking students for choosing San Carlos Apache College. Ayze pictures them taking what they have learned along on a journey, and asks them to continue their education.

How are food and community connected in San Carlos?

At Nalwoodi Denzhone Community’s farm, growing food includes passing on knowledge of crops valued in San Carlos. Apache Giant Squash, Apache Red Sugarcane, and Apache Red Corn are among the crops requested by the community. Young people work alongside staff, helping with farm tasks and learning through shared work.

Food also moves beyond the garden: the organization documents sugarcane deliveries to San Carlos Food Distribution and produce baskets for an elders’ luncheon. Its family events bring children and adults together for activities such as clay work, cooking, and gardening.

Where can someone hear Western Apache beyond a word list?

Whiteriver Unified School District’s speaking dictionary grew out of work by Alchesay High School students on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. Alongside individual words, its phrase recordings include questions about someone’s destination and answers about the weather. The dictionary credits students from two Apache Culture classes alongside several other contributors.

In San Carlos, the tribal language program combines family outreach, free classes, work with elders, and a master-and-apprentice program. Its seasonal curriculum connects language learning with activities across the year. The Apache Vocab Builder, released in 2021, adds recorded pronunciation and pictures to vocabulary categories through a partnership involving the tribe, Arizona State University, and the Apache Language Consortium.

The tribal program also mentors early childhood educators and helps Apache teachers obtain certification through Arizona’s Department of Education.

Fun Facts

  • An apple carries a trace of language contact. The White Mountain school dictionary records masáána for apple and identifies it as a borrowing from Spanish.
  • Grandfather is more specific than one English word suggests. The same White Mountain resource distinguishes shiwóyé hastiin, a mother’s father, from shichoo, a father’s father.
